Nude... Si Muore

Naked You Die

directed by Antonio Margheriti
released in 1968
duration 98 minutes

Nude... Si Muore (Naked You Die) is an average giallo at best, and it is dangerously close to being boring. The cinematography is colourful and nice, and the directing is steady, but the film contains a lot of quite annoying and ridiculous dialogue. In general, I do not mind films showing their age, but Nude... Si Muore is a bit too old-fashioned for my taste. The dialogue and interaction between the young women and young men seems especially stupid considering how natural it is nowadays. Perhaps this has to do with the fact that the film is set in a private, girls-only school where the code of conduct is more formal than usual, but even so, the scenes that are apparently supposed to be romantic and somehow playful, appear as nothing else but stupid. Many times I ended up shaking my head in disbelief. Fuck. Is the dialogue really that funny? I certainly do not think so.

On the positive side, the plot is pretty good, but not enough to lift this film to any new heights. It is pathetic, but probably the most memorable thing in Nude... Si Muore is the opening song called Nightmare, which is a kind of hybrid between James Bond theme music and the Batman theme. The bass line is strikingly similar to the Batman theme, and even the chorus "Night-maaaare!" is rhythmically and melodically reminiscent of "Bat-maaaan!" chorus.

The Dark Sky Films 2007 DVD R1 release that I watched has only an italian mono soundtrack, and if you are like me, you need to use the english subtitles to follow the dialogue. This film is recommended to Antonio Margheriti completists or giallo completists only. To everybody else, I recommend skipping it.
